John Maclean was hit by an 8-tonne truck and left a paraplegic while cycle training for the Nepean triathlon near his hometown of Penrith in 1988. He became the first person in a wheelchair to complete the Ironman World Championship and was part of the team at both the Olympics and Paralympics in 2000, and won a silver medal in rowing at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. Last year John Maclean competed in the Nepean Triathlon, 26 years after his accident, without his wheelchair after regaining some use of his legs.
