Press Release - Townsville Triathlon Looks Ahead to 2027 Under Biennial Event Model

The Townsville Triathlon and Multi-sport Festival will transition to a biennial event model, with the planning underway for the event’s return in August 2027.

The decision is intended to support the long-term sustainability of one of North Queensland’s most established sporting events while maintaining a high-quality and accessible experience for participants, volunteers, partners and the wider community.

Townsville has a proud history of multisport competition, including hosting major national and international events and the 2024 World Triathlon Multisport Championships.

Townsville Triathlon and Multisport Festival Committee Chair Clayton Cook said the city remained ideally positioned to host local, state and national-level competition and attract participants from across Australia.

"The Townsville Triathlon has a proud history spanning decades and remains an important part of our region's sporting landscape," Mr Cook said.

"Moving to a biennial format will allow us to continue delivering a high-quality event experience for competitors, volunteers, partners and supporters while building on the strong legacy of multi-sport in Townsville."

"Townsville has long been recognised as a premier destination for triathlon and multi-sport events, including hosting World Championship competition, and we remain committed to showcasing the region's outstanding facilities, climate and community spirit."

“We expect to continue to host a National Championship together with AusTriathlon.” 

Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto said Townsville's reputation as a sporting events destination had been built on the strength of elite competitions like the Townsville Triathlon.

"For decades, this event has challenged and inspired athletes, while fostering a strong and passionate multi-sport community in our region," Cr Dametto said. 

"It has built a proud legacy in Townsville, and we acknowledge the dedication of the organising committee, volunteers and supporters who have worked tirelessly to make it a success over many years.

“I look forward to seeing the festival return as a biennial event in 2027 and for decades to come.”

Townsville Enterprise CEO Claudia Brumme said the Townsville Triathlon and Multi-Sport Festival had made a significant contribution to the region's events calendar over many years.

"The Townsville Triathlon is a great event that we've enjoyed hosting in our city over the years and has played a significant role in showcasing Townsville North Queensland as a destination for sport and active lifestyles," Ms Brumme said.

"We look forward to seeing the next chapter of the event's journey unfold and wish the organising committee every success as they plan for 2027."

The date for the 2027 Townsville Triathlon and Multisport Festival is currently being finalised, with the event expected to take place in August 2027.
